Born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli, Maharashtra, Asha Bhosle is widely regarded as one of the best playback singers in India. Bhosle’s tryst with music began at an early age as her father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar was himself a classical singer. She made her playback debut at the age of 10 in 1943. It was for a Marathi film called ‘Majha Bal’. She began her Bollywood career with the song ‘Saawan Aarya’ in the film ‘Chunariya’ in 1948. Her career in Bollywood did not begin on a high as most of her songs were those that were rejected by leading singers. She received her first big break with the 1956 film C.I.D. Bhosle reached the peak of her career in the 60s after her songs for the legendary music director S.D. Burman. Throughout her career, she was pitted against her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar but she managed to carve out her own place with her wide repertoire. In 2000, she was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She has received two national awards as well, in 1981 and 1986. In 2008, she was conferred with Padma Vibhushan.
